Revisiting Argumentative Competence: Language Use and Indicators in Argumentation

Abstract. Argumentative competence, initially proposed in parallel to communicative competence, has been explored from multiple perspectives. However, its connection to language use remains underdeveloped. This paper advocates for a pragmatic approach to argumentative competence, examining both theoretical foundations and illustrative evidence, with a focus on argumentative indicators. We argue that a "non-formal, person-centered" logic stance and the essential role of language in argumentation necessitate a pragmatic perspective. Illustratively, we demonstrate that argumentative indicators function as pragmatic tools integral to argumentative competence and illustrate how they can be incorporated into its framework.
