Foundations and Extensions of Logic — An Interview with Timothy Williamson

Timothy Williamson is one of the most influential contemporary analytic philosophers. He serves as the Wykeham Professor of Logic at the University of Oxford and is a fellow of New College, Oxford. His research has deeply shaped several core areas of philosophy, including philosophical logic, epistemology, metaphysics, and the philosophy of language. He is particularly renowned for three major contributions.
Epistemology ("Knowledge First"): In his groundbreaking book Knowledge and its Limits (2000), he flipped traditional epistemology. Instead of analyzing "knowledge" as a combination of belief, truth, and justification, Williamson argues that knowledge is a fundamental, unanalyzable mental state. This framework is widely known as the "Knowledge-First" approach.
Philosophical Logic & Vagueness: In Vagueness (1994), he defended a highly striking view called epistemicism. He argues that vague predicates (like "tall" or "bald") actually have sharp, precise boundaries, but it is inherently impossible for us to know exactly where those boundaries lie.
Modal Metaphysics: In Modal Logic as Metaphysics (2013), he explores the logic of necessity and possibility, famously defending necessitism, the view that everything that exists necessarily exists, which carries profound implications for quantified modal logic.
Williamson is also highly regarded for his work on philosophical methodology. In The Philosophy of Philosophy (2007), he argues that philosophy is an armchair science but one that is subject to rigorous, formal standards of evaluation, much like any other disciplined inquiry.
This interview focuses on logic, covering fundamental issues in the philosophy of logic, the relationship between logic and metaphysics, philosophical problems in specific areas of logic such as predicate logic, modal logic, the logic of conditionals, and epistemic logic, as well as issues concerning the methodology of logic and research practice in logic.
